Sixteen-year-old Kennedy Charles and 10-year-old Kendall, daughters of Joel and Dori, are soon on their way to Manitoba Winter Games in Thompson with Team West Speed Skating. Short track speed skating is new to the Games this year.

Virden Oil Capitals rookie Justin Lee and hometown product Tyler Kirkup were honoured by the Manitoba Junior Hockey League for their successful seasons. Kirkup, the son of Kary and Suzanne, was selected to the MJHL Second All-Star Team.

Hometown product Tyler Kirkup has been big for the Virden Oil Capitals this season. The son of Suzanne and Kary Kirkup is sixth in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League in points, as of Sunday.

Ringette lovers got a special treat last Saturday Feb. 17 as two AA under-16 teams played at Tundra Oil & Gas Place in Virden.

Both the Virden Oil Kings and the Miniota-Elkhorn C-Hawks had players receive hardware from the North Central Hockey League. Oil Kings forward Tanner Lewis was voted the senior league’s Rookie of the Year.

Three Virden Oil Capitals have gone from being opponents last season to skating on the same line this winter. Josh Belcher, Hunter Cloutier and Jack Einarson are all 17-year-old rookies with the Manitoba Junior Hockey League team.
