Break and enter, rural family near Portage

Rural homeowners awoke to an alarming scenario in their kitchen.

No details were released about the type of stove or situation there. However, hot elements, unattended, can go terribly wrong. In this case the family discovered the danger.

On Nov. 17, just after midnight, Portage la Prairie RCMP responded to a break and enter at a residence on Road 60 North, in the RM of Portage la Prairie.

The homeowners woke up and could smell something burning. When they went to investigate, they realized that they had been broken into and the stove elements had been turned on. They shut them off and called police.

RCMP immediately attended. Several items had been stolen along with the homeowner’s vehicle. As officers were at scene investigating, the stolen vehicle taken from the residence had been involved in a collision on Hwy 1, in the RM of Cartier.

At approximately 12:20 am, Headingley RCMP responded to a single vehicle collision on Hwy 1, three kilometers east of Elie, Man. First responders on scene were attempting to treat two male occupants at scene who were agitated and uncooperative.

Once on scene Headingley RCMP confirmed that the vehicle involved was stolen from the earlier break and enter. Officers also located other stolen items inside the vehicle.

The driver, a 20-year-old male from the RM of Portage la Prairie was identified and found to have several outstanding warrants. He was arrested and taken to hospital where he was treated and released.

The passenger, a 17-year-old male from Long Plain First Nation, was not injured, and was arrested and transported to the Portage la Prairie RCMP detachment.

The 17-year-old male has been charged with Break and Enter, Theft of Motor Vehicle, Theft, Arson-Endanger Life, Arson- Damage to Property, Mischief, Trespass by Night and Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose.

Sydney Moose has been charged with Break and Enter, Theft of Motor Vehicle, Theft, Arson-Endanger Life, Arson-Damage to Property, Mischief, Trespass by Night, Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose and Failing to Comply x2.

Both have been remanded into custody.

RCMP continue to investigate.
