May 7 to 13 marks the 20th anniversary of North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week. NAOSH Week has the theme of “Make Safety a Habit" and focuses on the importance of preventing injury and illness in the workplace and raises understanding and awareness of safety and health issues. Led by the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE), this year's NAOSH Week kick off discussed the importance of making safety a habit among youth. “NAOSH Week is an opportunity to remind all Manitobans of the importance of making safety and health a top priority,” said Cliff Cullen, Minister of Growth, Enterprise and Trade. “It’s a chance for organizations and individuals to reflect on the many reasons why they should make safety a habit for themselves and for the next generation.” Safety leaders and professionals gathered at the Pinnacle Lounge at Investor's Group Stadium on Monday, May 8 to kick off the week. “SAFE Work Manitoba is dedicated to fostering a culture of workplace safety in the province through prevention services and partnerships with others in the safety community,” said Jamie Hall, Chief Operating Officer for SAFE Work Manitoba. “NAOSH Week is an opportune time for businesses and workers to come together to reinforce the important message that we all play a vital role in ensuring a safe and healthy workplace.” As part of NAOSH Week, many Manitoba employers develop safety activities in their workplace as a way to build prevention awareness with their employees and the general public, including: • launching a recognition program to reward health and safety suggestions • creating a company safety calendar with reminders and tips • hosting a family safety fair or picnic • conducting workplace safety games throughout the week. …2/ www.safemanitoba.com NEWS RELEASE - 2 - On Wednesday, May 10, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Shaw Park, SAFE Work Manitoba, the Winnipeg Goldeyes and the Technical Vocational High School are holding an event called InVest in Safety, where they will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for number of high-visibility safety vests in one location. The first 2,200 people to attend the event wearing a high-visibility safety vest will receive a free ticket to the home exhibition game between the Winnipeg Goldeyes and the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. For the first time, the NAOSH Awards will be celebrated in conjunction with the SAFE Work Awards on Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at a gala banquet.
