Boundary Lane Colony School graduation

“It takes a village to raise a child”

The Boundary Lane Colony School graduation on Jun. 16, was a small, family affair, with the phrase “It takes a village to raise a child” used a few times during the event which was held in the colony’s church area.

Following the procession of the grads, their introduction, and the singing of “Oh Canada”, School Principal Pam Jamieson welcomed everyone including family members from near and far, several former staff members, both of the area school trustees, and the area MLA.

In the principal’s opening remarks she thanked everyone for coming, and for the support of the school and students from the Hutterite community. Describing the three grads as, “The Handsome Grad Class of 2017” Jamieson gave the students a few bits of worldly advice that were echoed by the guest speaker Jordan Huberdeau.

Huberdeau is a former aide at the school, and is currently completing his education degree at Brandon University.

The advice given to the three grads was: in life there is failure, it is not the end of the world to fail. It can often make you stronger to face the next challenge. Enjoy the little things in life, for all things in life move quickly. Always try to be kind, learn to say yes, it can make you a better person, and remember that family and friends should always be important for the rest of your life. Try to find your passion in life and do things that you love, and fill your heart with joy.

Both speakers spoke of the grads growing up, and how quickly the time has gone by from the time they first met them.

During a PowerPoint presentation by the grads, images of the grads’ early years were shown, and how the school years flew by as they were learning, and having some fun.

The grads’ responded, each of them thanking their parents and teachers, and saying they will remember their time in school fondly.

The “Rose Ceremony” is now a regular feature of many small school grads, and Boundary Lane School was no exception. The three grads approached their parents and gave them each a red rose, and a hug of love and thanks for being there. It is a very emotional part of the graduation ceremony.

Principal Jamieson took time to read a letter of congratulations to the grads from M.P. Larry Maguire, who wished them great success in the years to come.

The students, with the help of school staff, Mrs. Poole and Mrs. Rozak, were awarded three diplomas each. They each received the gold level Fort La Bosse diploma, the province of Manitoba High School Diploma, and the province of Manitoba High School Technology Education Diploma.

Each student had taken part in Fort La Bosse Apprenticeship Trade Program, which gave them the chance to learn a trade and work with someone to gain trade experience. Students received recognition for their involvement in this important program.

The final award of the day was the Governor's General Medal in bronze for the highest academic standing. The medal was presented by Principal Jamieson, on behalf of school trustee, Margaret Walker. The winner of the award was Colin Kleinsasser, with an average of 86.3%. Colin is the son of Cornie and Judy Kleinsasser. Walker also congratulated the grads, and remembered them as just little boys starting in the colony school.

Following the exit of the grads there was a grad reception held with family, friends, and several former school staff members.

Later, a special meal was held, featuring some of the colony’s award winning pork.

In her closing remarks, Jamieson (who returns next fall as permanent principal) said, “We live in a fast-paced, instant information, and pressure packed world. Today’s children are faced with both challenges and opportunities. We are blessed here at Boundary Lane to have wonderful support, a strong community, and a true village approach.”
