Goodbye 2017 - Hello 2018

Students reflect on the past year, look forward to the next
new years stories

Teacher Maureen Ross challenged her Grade Five Class at Virden Junior High to write on the theme of “Goodbye 2017 – Hello 2018”. Their submissions were edited for length so we could fit them all in.

By Jaxon Hayden:

I am so grateful for many things that have happened this year. For example, my new ski doo! 2018 will be a great year because I will be in the 1st year of PeeWee hockey. I’m especially grateful for holidays because every year we go to Victoria to see my Uncle John, Aunty Jodi, Grandad, Grandma and my cousins.

Finally, the year 2018 will be amazing because I really like going on family trips. We might go to Toronto and go to the zoo!

By C.J Zapata:

I am so grateful for many things that have happened this year. For example, starting school at VJH and making new friends. 2018 will be a great year because I think my family has a plan for a vacation somewhere fun.

As I look back at 2017 and forward to a brand new year, I realize that I have many reasons to be thankful. Friends, family, and my home are very important to me.

By Chloe Jourdin:

I am so grateful for many things that have happened this year. For example, going to Mexico and getting Mrs. Ross as a teacher. 2018 will be a great year because I will get to go to the lake and go tubing, swimming and see my friend Katya. I also appreciate having Mrs. Ross as a teacher because she is helpful to me and others if we need help.

By Colten James:

I started piano in 2017 and am continuing on to 2018. I haven't gotten much done but have improved by a lot. 2018 will be a great year because I’m on an A team in hockey. We kind of just realized how strong our team is because of the AA tournament that we won (even though we’re just an A team).

As I look back at 2017 and forward to a brand new year, I realize that I have many reasons to be thankful. My hockey team, my piano teacher, and finally my parents for their support. All these are very important to me.

By Connor Hoemsen:

I'm grateful because I got a new dog and I made the atom A team! 2018 will be a great year because I will have another challenge to make the pee wee team! I’m especially grateful for my new border collie, his name is Gunner. Gunner’s really friendly, his best friend is Tucker. Tucker is a 49 year old dog and Gunner is 14 years old.

As I look back at 2017 and forward to a brand new year, I realize that I have many reasons to be thankful. For the bus taking me to school, my mom taking me out of bed on time.

By Gerald Carreon:

I am so grateful for many things that have happened this year. For example, all the new animes and all my new friends. 2018 will be a great year because there are new RWBY episodes. I love it with a burning passion. I’m especially grateful for the new anime because anime is nice looking.

By Kate Craig:

I am so grateful for many things that have happened this year. For example, we kept our camper and we got our really bad puppy, Ellie. I call her El-mel. Ellie is meant to be a “Blue tick coon hound” with some “Great Pyrenees”.

The year 2018 will be amazing because we will probably go to Jasper in the summer and go camping a lot. We will probably try to teach Ellie how to walk on a leash a bit better, too!

By Keisha Brown:

I am so grateful for many things that have happened this year. For example, I started grade 5 and have met many new friends. 2018 will be a great year because I am turning 11 years old! I really like birthday parties. We have cake, ice cream and presents!

By Kendall Charles:

This year, I was in Shrek and I got my new room. 2018 will be a great year because I might be going to the Manitoba Games on the Westman speed skating team! I’m especially grateful to have been in Shrek the musical. My sisters Kennedy and McKenna were, too. I was young Fiona, Kennedy was Gingy and Humpty Dumpty, and McKenna was a town’s person and a dancer.

By Lane Flecknor:

I’m especially grateful to start hockey because I love hockey. It is my favorite sport! I can wear my Calgary Flames jersey for practice this year. Liam and I play for the Virden Junior Oil Capitals; we have white jerseys for home and black for away.

2018 will be a great year because I will have lots of fun going to the lake in the summer.

By Liam Flecknor:

I’m especially grateful for starting baseball during the summer. I got to pitch in our last game. I hope I get to be the same number, number 4. Playing with all my friends was lots of fun! 2018 will be a great year because there's lots of stuff to keep me busy like playing sports and because my cousins from B.C. are coming here for the whole summer.

By Luc Plett:

I am so grateful for many things that have happened this year. For example, the cattle prices went up and had BIG calves! We had 14 open cows - that's really good.

My team and I we won the Dolphin AA Tournament.

I’m especially grateful for family and friends because I would be lost, lonely and sad without them. I also appreciate having Mrs. Ross as a teacher because she is so encouraging.

By Natasha Chaske:

My cousin Kelsey came back and I had so much fun visiting my friends. My brother got a job at The Gaming Center and my nephews came back. 2018 will be a great year because during school break my Dad said we might go to Minot in the United States. I can spend more time with my nephews. I also appreciate my brother Garrett getting a job at The Gaming Center because I love him. I want what’s best for him.

By Parker Hunter:

I’m grateful of turning 10, so I don’t have to say I’m 9 anymore and I’m grateful just for the little things that have happened this beautiful, amazing year. 2018 will be a great year because it is a brand new, freshly baked year. 2018 will be amazing because the new year is always action packed! I mean packed to the RIM. It’s awesome, happy, sad, exciting, scary, hot, cold, wet, you name it, it’s got it! It’s just amazing what can happen.

I have many reasons to be thankful. Family, friends, and just plain greatness are very important to me.

By Petey Haverchuk:

I’m especially grateful for almost beating a world record! I lost by 1.34928 seconds. It is too bad that I lost, but I can try again next year. (For beating the world record of…”Fastest time to drink 1 liter of lemon juice”.)

Finally, the year 2018 will be amazing because I can discover new limits. Such as, doing a tailwhip on my scooter, doing a backflip, and mastering “tech decking”.

By Sage Gaudreau:

I am so grateful for many things that have happened this year. I got a baby cousin named Sam and I got my I phone. 2018 will be a great year because I will be going on a cruise ship! The ship I'm going on is so much bigger than the 2 other ships that I been on. The last time I went on a ship my mom and brother got sick and I do not want them to get sick again.

By Tatyana Laterveer:

I am so grateful for many things that have happened this year. I’m especially grateful for my new dog, Francis, because he used to live in the bushes for 1 or 2 years. He was all scarred up and bruised. The Virden Rescue Shelter found him and he was put in foster care. We ended up adopting him. I also appreciate that I didn’t move to Brandon because I don’t like cities. I think they are dirty and too big.

Finally, the year 2018 will be amazing because I get to start a new year and forget the bad times in 2017.

By Tess Coulter:

I’m especially grateful for having Erin home for Christmas because I have not seen her in 2 months and it feels like more! I really miss her. We went ziplining over a lake in Ontario. We made matching paintings with neat designs. In June, we went to the creek and took Erin’s grad pictures.

Finally, the year 2018 will be amazing because I will have a new baby cousin that will be born early in the year.

By Yurixshi Oliva Quintero:

I am so grateful for many things that have happened this year. I’m especially grateful for my mom because she had my baby brother, Anthony. I was very excited to have a little brother like him. I like to feed him and rock him.

2018 will be a great year because I hope I can go to Mexico!
