Curling

For the longest time curling fans have felt that the best ever Canadian women's team was a toss-up between the Jones, either Manitoba's Jennifer or Nova Scotia's Colleen. With her second World Championship title in North Bay (Ont.), I do believe Jennifer, the six-time national champion, has finally separated herself from the "Blue Noser" with her win over Sweden's Anna Hasellborg. This title should, has to, cement her in the upper echelon as one of the all time greatest female curlers to ever throw the heavy hunk of granite.

Trivia time #1) How much does a rock weigh?

The men's World Championship begins tomorrow in Las Vegas with Newfie's favourite son Brad Gushue back to defend his title but only Sweden's Niklas Edin's foursome has the talent to derail that dream ... but he won't.

Trivia time #2) Who was the last Canadian rink to win back-to-back world titles?

Golf

I love watching the self taught (he's never had a golf lesson in his life) long ball hitting Bubba Watson play golf. His talent, imagination and that unorthodox swing of his always captures the attention and hearts of golf fans everywhere, making him one of the most popular duffers on the PGA Tour. The 11-time winner's lopsided win at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play Championship vaults him up the FedEx standings and puts him in a good place heading into next week's Masters at Augusta.

Trivia #3) it's a tough one, what is Bubba's real 1st name?

Rory McIlroy, along with a host of others, also wants to put on the Green Jacket so that he can add that title to his impressive resume and complete his career Grand Slam, the ultimate goal of every PGA golfer.

Basketball

We're down to the final four in college "hoops" with the four remaining NCAA teams being the Michigan Wolverines, Villanova Wildcats, Kansas State Jayhawks and the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers, the 11th seed Cinderella team that is inspirationally led by a nun (Sister Jean). They'll be in tough this weekend against the Wolverines who have too much defence for them to handle while the Wildcats will squeak by the Hawks because of their great shooting. Look for Villanova to win it all in San Antonio.

Hockey

The Winnipeg Jets are flying higher than ever before, setting franchise records for points (102) as they begin to wrap up their regular season (one week to go). Not satisfied with resting on their laurels (they clinched a playoff spot last weekend), they're now running on all cylinders and gunning for 1first place as they find themselves only five points behind Nashville.

The Oil Caps continue to steam right along in their second round series against the Winkler Flyers as they're receiving contributions from all team members which helps to explain their commanding 2-0 series lead (hopefully 3-0 by the time you read this). A lot of credit has to go to head coach Troy Leslie and his coaching staff for keeping their "horses" in check and focused on the tough task at hand. This is the time in the season where they separate the men from the boys, meaning that every sacrifice possible needs to be done, however trivial it may seem at the time, (like blocking a shot, shorter shifts, the extra effort back-checking, playing the man...)

Those who attended any of the NCHL final games were treated to some outstanding action as the Grandview Comets swept the Miniota-Elkhorn C-Hawks to claim their third crown in the last five years. The level of play and intensity was noticeably quite a bit higher than regular season play which delighted the huge partisan crowds that took in all the action.

Trivia answer; #1) 44lbs.(20kgs.); #2) Dave Nedohin and Randy Ferbey in 2002-03; #3) Gerry (his dad called him Bubba after NFL great Bubba Smith).

Until next time....
