Brierwood Creek Cafe & Grill

Kenton restaurant in new hands, with a little help from friends
Brierwood
Open on May 1, the sign on Brierwood Creek Cafe & Grill is outstanding on Kenton's main street, beckoning diners and coffee patrons.

New, local owners have taken over the dining service in Kenton, in the café formerly known as Houston’s Family Restaurant.

Dennis and Lisa Hemrica from Kenton have opened Brierwood Creek Café & Grill located at 300 Woodworth Avenue – the main business street.

Lisa is the cook, and Marilyn Martinook (another Kentonite) is employed in the restaurant.

The restaurant’s interior has been renewed.

“A bunch of great friends and family painted all weekend to give the place a facelift,” says Lisa, with excitement in her voice on May 1, the first day of business for Brierwood.

The Hemricas will be tweaking the menu, just slightly.

“Everybody seems to like the menu, I’m just going to expand on a few things.”

She has heard about the great pizza.

“I had a 10-year old kid come in and ask Betty (Houston) to ‘please, please show these people how to make those pizzas’,” she chuckles, adding that the family is feeling a sense of support from the Kenton community.

Along with the usual equipment, the restaurant has a chicken fryer. Wraps, subs as well as pizza will be on the menu, and they have some catering jobs already lined up.

For the coffee and pie crowd, Hemrica says pecan pie is still on the menu.

“I got the pecans yesterday, haven’t got it made yet. A friend of mine has a good recipe so she’s going to help me out with that.”

The restaurant was named after Brierwood Creek that runs by the little town of Kenton, and feeds Kenton Dam. Kenton is less than a 30-minute drive from Virden, and just about 15 minutes south of Hamiota.
