It was a rainy Sept. 26 just after 1 p.m. when the fire siren sounded in Virden. Wallace District Fire Department trucks headed to a fire call.

Kim Chaske office secretary at Canupawakpa recalls the details vividly. She was heading back on to Canupawakpa community after an appointment at a Virden hair salon. She pulled to the side of Hwy 83 to let the fire trucks roar by, having no idea it was the big meeting hall in her own community that was on fire.

Many fire trucks were on hand to attempt to extinguish the fire which was difficult to get at, burning under the building’s metal cladding.

When Chaske arrived at her office, Elections Manitoba was there with the official notice of the upcoming elections for chief and council.

The community hopes to have a new building in time for the Christmas 2020 season.
