Travel abroad results in a prickly situation.

With a growing concern about variant strains of coronavirus, Premier Brian Pallister has effectively banned leisure travel for government personnel.

The matter came to a head regarding travel to Arizona by the Chair of Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.

Late day on Monday, Feb. 1 Premier Brian Pallister made a statement about travel restrictions:

“Due to concerns about COVID-19 variants now emerging and in order to provide additional clarity regarding public health orders, all Manitoba government Order-in-Council appointees, including those serving on agencies, boards, and commissions, may not travel for leisure purposes outside permitted travel areas, effective immediately. Should they do so, their appointment will be terminated.

“After discussion with my office, Wayne McWhirter will be stepping down as chair of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.”
