On July 4, 2015, a massive hail storm sliced its way through the village of Elkhorn. In its path, it left hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage to homes, personal property, animals, and vehicles. A large number of vehicles were written off by auto pack with one of them being the village handi-van that provides important access to many seniors in the village and the senior’s homes.

The Elkhorn and area handi-van group started to raise funds with a goal of $30,000 to replace it. Since they started there have been a number of donations from area organizations and private individuals. The Elkhorn and area chamber of commerce helped the cause by giving the group a one year loan that enabled them to buy the van since its use is so important. The new vehicle is a 2016 Dodge Ram van that can hold nine people along with the driver, has mounts for wheel chair tie downs, and an electric lift. The new vehicle operation does not require a commercial driver’s license to operate it, so perhaps some more volunteer drivers might step forward. At a later date, the fundraising group plans to have lettering on the side of the vanElkhorn handi-van rides again
