When a hail storm hit Elkhorn and severely damaged the Elkhorn Handi Van, the community sprang into action to replace it. Recently the Elkhorn Handi Van committee completed its fundraising goal of $73,000 along with some extra revenue.

The source of this funding was from insurance, private donations, business and corporate donations and a short term loan from the Elkhorn Chamber of Commerce.

The new van is a 2016 Dodge Ram Pro Master that can seat nine, has wheel chair locks, a loading ramp and can be driven by a holder of a Class 5 Manitoba driver’s license.

Jill Canart, one of the committee members, hopes that the Class 5 license will encourage more volunteer drivers. The new van, purchased from “Move Mobility” of Winnipeg also gives a great view for all its passengers.

Said Jill Canart, “The new van purchase was a community project that will help the activities of S.A.I.L. and other community groups. The handi van is a community necessity and resource for our senior residents to keep them involved in the community activities.”

Canart explained, “During the winter months, local senior residents are brought to the drop-in centre six days a week, keeping both minds and bodies active.

“Any additional monies donated or raised for the handi van project will be used for ongoing van projects and upkeep.”
