The 42nd Canadian election was announced last Sunday and some candidates in both Brandon-Souris riding and Dauphin–Swan River–Neepawa are promptly declaring their candidacy.
Virden Empire-Advance reaches households in these two electoral constituencies. For Brandon- Souris, Larry Maguire with the Conservative Party of Canada has represented town and country since the 2013 by-election.
He announced his re-election campaign last Sunday.
The Green Party of Canada candidate has also stepped forward. David Neufeld from Boissevain is running again.
For the Liberal Party of Canada, Jodi Wyman is running.
President of the NDP for Brandon- Souris, Garnet Boyd stated, “We will be holding a nomination meeting shortly.”
The northerly riding of Dauphin- Swan River-Neepawa stretches as far as Red Deer Lake, several miles north of Swan River, and takes in Lake Winnipegosis on the way south to Macgregor, east of Carberry. The Constituency southern boundary heads west along the north side of Brandon and the RM of Elton and Daly, taking in Sioux Valley Dakota Nation.
The southernmost tip of the west side of the huge riding of includes the former RM of Archie, the former RM of Miniota and the Woodworth portion of the RM of Wallace-Woodworth.
For the Conservative Party of Canada, Robert Sopuck has been in office here since Inky Mark’s resignation in 2010.
Sopuck, named Bob Lepischak of Neepawa, as his campaign manager for the 2015 general election.
Inky Mark announced his intention to run as an Independent.
Kate Storey for the Green Party of Canada is on the list of candidates.
For the NDP, Laverne Mitchell Lewycky is the candidate.
Ray Piché is listed as the Liberal Party of Canada candidate for the Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa riding.
In the last few federal elections there have been up to six names on the ballots, some representing little known parties.
It is early in the game with the 42nd Federal election running twice as long as the usual 37 day election period. Major media across Canada have been talking about the greater cost to tax payers. Elections Canada officials will be on salary longer and office costs will be on the tab.
Preliminary candidate election expense as listed on the Elections Canada website for Brandon-Souris is $211,534. For the larger riding of Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa, up to $245,771 is allowed per candidate. That is not to say the candidates and their respective parties will spend that amount.
