Greyhound Canada cancels all prairie bus routes

Falling bus ridership, package shipping blamed
buses cancelled
Buses like this one stopping in Virden will no longer be part of the prairie landscape come fall.

Greyhound Canada announced Monday afternoon that it is cancelling all bus service across the prairies, northern Ontario and most of BC as of Oct. 31.

The news came out in an email announcement sent to Greyhound’s partner agencies, including the one in Virden. The message reads, in part:

“We have made the difficult decision to downsize our Canadian business by discontinuing operations in all provinces except Ontario and Quebec and one route in British Columbia.

“We will end all routes on October 31, 2018 in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. In British Columbia, all routes will discontinue except for Vancouver to Seattle, which is operated by Greyhound Lines, Inc. (U.S.) and BoltBus.

“In northern Ontario, we will exit the Trans-Canada west of Sudbury.”

Greyhound blames a 41 per cent drop in ridership along with a 35 per cent reduction in package shipping since 2010. It hopes the cuts will save its business.

“We envision that these changes will result in a viable, sustainable business on the remaining routes.

Downsizing at Greyhound began several years ago when routes in Manitoba were dropped or reduced as a cost-saving measure.
