How cold is too cold?

This, Monday morning Feb. 8, is too cold. The Empire-Advance office, generally open for phone calls, and appointment visits from 9 a.m. – 12 Noon is closed this morning.

Many dogs need mittens and a coat – which they hate – and just out for five minutes, (depending upon their own fur cover).

So, we are happy for February sun and longer days that January, when we often get this weather, but the UV index is forecast to be 1 today. What does that mean to us? You won’t get sunburned.

Fort La Bosse and Park West school divisions have shut down their buses and closed their schools today.

Environment Canada for the Virden area (out of a Melita weather station) says it’s going to be windy: west 20 km/h increasing to 40 gusting to 60 near noon. High minus 26. Wind chill minus 52 this morning and minus 42 this afternoon.

For those taking their forecast from the Shoal Lake air port reading the expected high is lower: minus 28. Wind chill minus 53 this morning and wind chill minus 45 this afternoon.

Frigid polar air escaped from the north and is here to stay for the week.
