Construction of a new bridge has closed a busy provincial road near Kola for the next 12 weeks.

Drivers who normally use PR 542 between Kola (PR 257) and Kirkella on the TransCanada Highway are being detoured around construction. Manitoba Infrastructure suggests drivers use PR 256 instead, 10 km to the east.

The affected section provides access to private properties and businesses like Westwood Ranch and Garden Centre. Owner Jill Humphries says if the bridge work finishes on time, the business will be okay.

“Extensive work has already been completed on the south end of 542 with a complete rebuild and raise. So the work now on the bridge should further improve our access at long last!”

That road takes a beating from oilfield vehicles and the Humphries have lobbied several years for improvements, some of which have already been done.

“They have repaired the 542 from Kola to our road end and that has been done very well,” said Humphries, “but it needed to be continued north as there are still really bad spots.”

The road was closed Wed. Jan. 9 and will remain so until March 31 of this year.
