“It was quite a contest this year,” said Lynne Alexander, a featured artist in the Sunrise Credit Union’s 2018 “Our Manitoba Photo Contest”.

Although Alexander wasn’t the overall winner, her beautiful and heartwarming photo will be featured as the April photo in the Sunrise CU calendar next year.

Judges decided between hundreds of photo submissions from all over Manitoba, to pick a grand winner plus the 12 photos to grace each month of 2019.

Alexander’s photo is of her two-year-old granddaughter Abby Reimer bending down to see a crocus.

She and her granddaughter from Redvers, “an outside little girl”, were across the road from the Alexander cattle farm.

“She wanted to see the purple flowers.” Grandma wouldn’t let her pick them.

“She’s just touching them, and kind of feeling they were nice and soft. She was having a great time.”

Alexander, who was a featured photographic artist in the CP Historic Gallery in Virden in 2010 keeps a low profile. She says of her work, “It’s a hobby.”

Her specialty?

“It’s not people; anything but people,” she says laughing, although photos of her four grandchildren grace the walls of her home.

At present, Alexander uses a Nikon-a D810 with a focus on photographing nature and things of interest in her environment.

“That’s the best part about farming that other people don’t see, because you’re out there early,” she says.

This was the fifth year for the Sunrise CU photo contest, and Alexander’s fourth time to be featured in the calendar. She has had her photos used in several other calendars over the years.

The winner of the 2018 Sunrise Credit Union "Our Manitoba Photo Contest" was Scott Smith of Deloraine.

His photo, "A Prairie Sunset", will grace the cover of the Sunrise Credit Union 2019 Calendar.

The contest was open to all Manitobans, and each photographer was able to submit a maximum of three images. With an overwhelming response, hundreds of photos were screened and shortlisted by a panel of delegates from the three supporting partners. The final winning entries were then voted on by the public.
