Rare disease runner sidelined in Portage

World record attempt thwarted

Runner Dave Proctor arrived in the Virden area Wednesday morning July 18 on his cross Canada run for rare diseases.

He stopped briefly just east of town to chat with Cade and Danika Scharff near their home on the Trans-Canada Highway. Cade has a rare health condition; he and his parents Rita and Chad are active in raising awareness.

After leaving Virden, Proctor continued his eastward journey but was forced by back pain to take a hiatus in Portage la Prairie. He hopes to continue the run destined for Newfoundland, but has abandonned his attempt to break a world record by arriving in 72 days.
