Council Hears

RCMP Corporal Matt Hipwell had good news for Council at the regular public meeting, August 16.

Three males have been charged with thefts or break and enter in Virden and RCMP are optimistic these arrests will reduce the property crimes in the area.

“We recovered a chunk of the property out of multiple storage lockers,” stated Corp. Hipwell. Some of the items included sporting equipment and tools.

“Property crime is one of the most difficult crimes to solve,” states Hipwell. The investigation involved about half the detachment. “With the three charged, we believe it’s going to curb it.”

Corporal Hipwell spends about 50 percent of his time on administrative work, actively policing the rest of the time.

Constable Catherine Ternier has moved from Virden Detachment after seven and a half years of work here. Constable Carleigh Bonkowski, from Carman  MB, has taken up duty in Virden. She is a new officer out of the Regina Depot who had experience with emergency dispatching in the area, through working as a 9-1-1 operator based in Brandon.

Also new, Constable Sherry Allan comes to the detachment with over a dozen years of experience.
