Virden’s Seventh Avenue N. bridge replacement project will receive joint federal and provincial funding through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. The announcement came this week.

In the spring budget for 2021 the Town of Virden announced that just over $1.7 million was allotted in this year’s budget for the replacement of the bridge and had made application to the federal Canada infrastructure program for funds to help offset this cost.

The funding package to Virden includes $949,886 from the federal government, $527,662 from the province, with $105,596 left for the Town of Virden to pay.

Joint federal and provincial funding through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program will support 17 municipal transportation infrastructure projects in Manitoba.

The intention is that these projects “will create jobs, improve road safety, and ensure long-term sustainable infrastructure while building strong and well-connected communities.”

Other neighbouring municipalities have received grants under this program for a wide variety of infrastructure improvements.

In Hamiota Municipality the funding will be split between the Federal government ($2,467,121), the Provincial government ($1,370,486) and the municipality ($274,262). The project aims to renew approximately 108 km of roadway, upgrading the weight and volume capacity within the municipal truck route network. The grant will also stabilize nine road sites where large quantities of subsurface material will be removed to be replaced with Tire-Derived Aggregate, created from shredded tires.
