Virden's 2020 Canada Day celebrations fired high in the sky

A heart lights the sky

A spectacular fireworks show dominated the sky over Virden on July 1. Members of Wallace District Fire Department did the honours.

Of some 30 businesses, homes and government agencies flying the Canadian flag and other red and white décor in celebration of the July 1st Dominion Day, “the most decorated storefronts are on Nelson Street West,” said Kel Smith in a report for the Canada Day Celebration 2020 committee.

While the usual all-day celebration in Victoria Park could not take place this year – just one more COVID-19 effect – the giant flag from Canada’s Peace Tower was hoisted. This has been a Canada Day custom since it was donated to Virden through the efforts of Jim Moffatt some years ago.
