Although Josh Wiens was the two-time Most Valuable Player of the Castlegar Rebels, the Oak Lake product also impressed with his off-ice and academic achievement.
The son of Brad and Angie Wiens was recently awarded a bursary and a scholarship for his time in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. He was the second ever recipient of the $1,500 Remembering Grant Sheridan Scholarship. Wiens also received a $1,000 KIJHL bursary. He is pursuing kinesiology studies while playing hockey at Briercrest College in Caronport, Sask.
The Grant Sheridan Scholarship honours the memory of its namesake, a long-time Kelowna Chiefs owner and general manager. It recognizes hockey commitment, academic achievement, and community involvement.
Wiens was also one of 13 players and one game official to receive a KIJHL bursary. The winners are selected based on the criteria of academic achievement, sportsmanship, hockey participation and community participation and service.
Wiens, who played three seasons for the Rebels, has given back to his communities – Castlegar and Oak Lake – in various ways. He has helped with Special Olympics ringette, served food at seniors’ homes, built compost boxes, and participated in community sandbagging.
