Officers with the Norway House RCMP were kept busy with impaired drivers between April 30 and May 3 as six drivers were stopped and charged for driving under the influence.

On April 30, at 1:15 a.m., officers observed a pickup truck nearly colliding with a First Nation Safety Officer’s vehicle on Provincial Road (PR) 373. The vehicle was stopped and the subsequent investigation led to the arrest of the 45-year-old male driver for impaired driving, who then provided breath samples that were two and a half times the legal limit.

Later that afternoon, at 4:40 p.m., officers received a report of a vehicle driving erratically and at very high speeds near the community COVID-19 checkpoint. The vehicle was located and the 19-year-old female driver was arrested for impaired driving and provided breath samples that were over twice the legal limit.

On May 2, at 1:45 a.m., a report was received of an intoxicated male operating an ATV on Alex Duncan Drive. Officers attended to the area and located the ATV. The 33-year-old male ATV operator was arrested for impaired driving and provided breath samples that were over twice the legal limit.

Later that afternoon, at 2:40 p.m., officers were called to assist First Nation Safety Officers who had pulled over a vehicle in the community. The investigation led to the arrest of the 34-year-old male driver for impaired driving, who provided breath samples that exceeded the legal limit.

On May 3, at 1:50 p.m., officers conducted a traffic stop on PR 373. The subsequent investigation led to the arrest of the 42-year-old male driver for impaired driving, who then provided breath samples that were nearly twice the legal limit. The driver was also found breaching a Conditional Sentence Order and remanded into custody.

Later that evening, at 7:25 p.m., officers were called to assist First Nation Safety Officers who had pulled over a vehicle in the community. The investigation led to the arrest of the 38-year-old male driver for impaired driving, who provided breath samples that were over three times the legal limit.

Five of the six drivers were released for court scheduled July 22, 2021, in Norway House with each receiving a 90-day licence suspension as well having their vehicle seized and impounded.

The RCMP remains committed to enforcing this high-risk driving behaviour.
