Oak Lake Island Resort celebrated Canada’s 150th in style. The morning started with the first Farmer’s Market of the season from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Celebrations continued from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. with a 52-foot inflatable obstacle course, a bubble machine, balloons, glitter tattoos, and more. The beach was available for those who wanted to catch some sun and play in the water. Come dusk there was a fantastic display of fireworks for all to enjoy. Casey Yeryk and Sun Dog Painting out of Brandon (and their crew), not only sponsored part of the fireworks display, but put on the fireworks show as well.

According to the campground manager Wanda Grant, Canada Day celebrations at Oak Lake Island resort this year were in a big way a direct result of Roberta Jones’ hard work.

Jones has been a summer resident at Oak Lake Beach since 1981. She said, “There needed to be something more than just the farmer’s market for Canada Day.” So she, her husband Casey, and friend Marion Normand got together and made plans. They contacted the RM of Sifton and got a Canada Day cake from them. Jones went to MP Larry Maguire’s office, and got Canada pins and flags to hand out at a gazebo they set up at Oak Lake Island Resort.

The Canada Day cake cutting had taken place at the farmer’s market area at Oak Lake Island at 10:00 a.m. on Jul. 1. Present to cut the cake were councilors Stan Cochrane and Scott Phillips. New reeve for RM of Sifton, Cyril Druwe, was also present.
