Selkirk RCMP made a life-and-death save when they responded to a call on Wednesday, Aug. 21.
At 9:45 p.m., Selkirk RCMP received a 911 call reporting a female standing on the edge of the bridge that spans the Red River.
Two officers responded within minutes and upon arrival, noted a woman perched on the outside railing of the bridge with her back to the river water below.
They approached the female and attempted a dialogue with her but she refused to continue the conversation.
Quick action on the part of an officer saved the would-be victim.
One of the officers returned to the police vehicle to set up a road block and stop on-coming traffic.
His actions drew the woman’s attention away from the officer directly in front of her. Recognizing this opportunity, the officer immediately grabbed a hold of the female.
She attempted to fall backwards into the Red River but with the assistance of back-up officers arriving at the scene, she was pulled over the railing to safety.
The 40-year-old female, who was not injured, was subsequently transported to hospital for further assessment.
