On May 14, at approximately 7:30 p.m., RCMP were notified to be on the look-out for a vehicle that was stolen at gunpoint in Winnipeg.

An RCMP officer on patrol on Highway 101, near Pipeline Road, located the stolen vehicle. A traffic stop was initiated, however the vehicle failed to stop and fled at a high rate of speed. The officer lost sight of the vehicle and alerted other officers in the area.

Three hours later, at approximately 10:35 p.m., Selkirk RCMP responded to a report of a single vehicle collision on Manitoba Avenue, in Selkirk. A passer-by reported that a vehicle collided with a tree and the driver got out and fled the scene on foot. When officers arrived on scene it was confirmed this was the stolen vehicle from earlier in the evening.

Officers immediately contained the scene and surrounding area. Police Service Dog ‘Earl’ attended the scene and began tracking the suspect. Earl led officers to the suspect, who was found hiding in a field. The male refused to listen to officer’s commands and Earl was deployed to assist with the high-risk arrest.

The man was subsequently arrested, and taken to hospital where he was treated and released.
