This past week the Grade 5/6’s from Souris School invited all of the Kindergarten students to take part in a Mini Festival du Voyageur. The grade 5/6’s planned and coordinated this unique event based on what they experienced in Winnipeg in February. The stations they ran and taught included Fur Trading Games, C’est la But! (ball hockey), Fort building, hoop dancing, and Indigenous art.
Incorporating various aspects from their short visit to the Fort Gilbraltar grounds, the grade 5-6 students recognized the Manitoban Francophone and Indigenous culture and incorporated both English and French into the planned activities. You could tell the kindergarten students were engaged and excited to experience meaningful and authentic learning in our own playground. We hope they keep this enthusiasm once they get to Grade 5/6 and experience the real Festival du Voyageur for themselves!
