Dear STCP,
I am moving and cannot take my pet with me - how do I rehome my pet?

Dear Reader,
Rehoming your pet is a very serious event. Remember, your family is attached to your pet as well as your pet is attached to you.

Is your pet up to date on vaccinations? Spayed or neutered? This will not only ensure you have a healthy pet but also ensure they will not be used for breeding and bringing yet more unwanted pets into the world. Contact rescue groups, professional trainers or your local vet for advice on rehoming pets.

Reputable rescue groups will ensure that your pet has been rehomed to a home that has gone through an adoption application process, reference checks and home check. Vets, trainers and rescue groups are often asked by clients to keep an eye out for certain types of pets as well.

When you find someone who is interested in your pet, please ask them to fill in an application, or at least ask for personal references and a vet reference, and call them!

Ask to visit the potential new family as well without the pet. Find out what your gut says about this family as your pet’s new forever home.

Sad to say but there are people out there that are involved in dog fighting and are only looking for pet’s for that purpose.

When you hand over your pet to the new owners, write them a letter of your pets likes and dislikes. Take the toys, treats, food bowls, blankets etc. to send with them to their new home so they have some familiarity while they are getting used to their new family.

Remember having a pet is a lifelong commitment and your pet can live 10-15 years - be prepared. Really think about it before you get a pet and really think about it before you get rid of one.

Strays That Can’t Pay is a local registered charity dedicated to helping the people and their pets of surrounding First Nation Communities, through education, information, support and guidance, with no judgment, no criticism.

We are not veterinarians. We are not professional trainers. We are just people wanting to help.

We will be having a ‘Dear STCP’ pet column where you can email (straysthatcantpay@ gmail.com) or mail (Box 252, Elkhorn, MB R0M 0N0) your pet related questions to us and we will do our best to answer them; referring to trainers, vets and others when needed. We are looking forward to providing some informative and entertaining reading courtesy of Virden Empire Advance.
