An Oil Slick

Scotties - historically weak field
Buchy

MJHL

With little more than a week to go in the regular schedule, the Oil Caps should easily be able to hold on to their fourth place position which would see them match up against the fifth place Selkirk Steelers in the first round of the playoffs. Their next home game is Friday night when the Waywayseecappo Wolverines come to TOGP.

NCHL

The league playoffs are down to the semi finals with the Russell Rams taking on the Swan Valley Axemen while the Oil Kings face the Miniota-Elkhorn C-Hawks in a best of five series that should draw huge crowds and have local fans on the edge of their seats from start to finish. Both of these teams are very talented and it should be a great series but quite often skill doesn't determine the winner, it often comes down to which team is the most disciplined. Game three is Saturday night in Elkhorn.

Scotties Tournament of Hearts

In one of the weakest curling fields in living memory, if anybody but Rachel Homan, Jennifer Jones or Chelsea Carey doesn't win this year's Scotties, then a national criminal investigation should be held. The overall depth, experience and talent simply isn't there this year and if Jones doesn't wake up and pick up her game soon, it'll be a two-horse race. Since Homan has been so dominant nationally and internationally this season, it'll be hers to lose and I'm sure she has no plans to do that any time soon.

PGA

One of the nicest guys on the Tour is taking a negative PR (public relations) beating from friends, foes and fans alike after what he did in Mexico after winning a tournament there recently. His regular caddie couldn't make it so he hired a local caddie and they agreed his fee would be $4,000. It should be noted that regular caddies usually get around 10 per cent of the pros winnings. Lo and behold, "Koo" goes on to win the tournament along with the $1.3 million first purse.

Now here's the rub. With the win, Kuchar only bumps up his caddie’s fee to $5,000 (less than half a percent of his winnings) and when that becomes public knowledge, he's bombarded with nasty comments (tight wad, cheap, unfair, Scrooge) from people from all walks of life, including his fellow competitors. Most people believe $50K would have been a much more appropriate compensation, which is exactly what the caddie wants. What do you think, did he stiff his amigo? Si!

NFL

It appears that the Colin Kaepernick saga (collusion lawsuit against the NFL) has come to a conclusion in the good old U. S. of A and some people are not that impressed. Blackballed by the league after he started kneeling during the game day national anthem, in protest of social and racial injustice and inequality against American Blacks (ie. Black Lives Matter), Kaepernick has decided to settle out of court. The NFL is truly relieved as going to court would have been a PR nightmare and they were desperate to avoid this type of image at all cost, and they did.

Some people view this as selling himself out to the league and not standing behind what you truly believe in, as he had promised to do. Maybe it's self-preservation, who knows. What we definitely won't know is how many millions of dollars he pocketed due to the standard confidentiality agreement, but it's safe to say he will never be in the "soup line". It's estimated he'll pocket about $60 - $80 million.

Manny Machado going to the Padres, who says money doesn't talk, what a waste of talent. What's next, Bryce Harper signs with the Marlins? Until next time....
