An Oil Slick

Buchy on big BLUES win, the Jets' trade, Pro golf stars and local baseball

NHL

For the first time in their 52 years of existence, the St. Louis Blues are Stanley Cup champions, and they did it the hard way by winning three games in the crazy confines of the Boston Garden. Most sports coaches preach "good things happen when you work hard", and they're right. The big bruising forechecking style of the Blues will no doubt serve as a template for many other teams for years to come.

The Jets trading D-man Jacob Trouba to the NY Rangers was a good move because a) he was going to cost the club too much money in a new contract but also b) he never wanted to be in "Winterpeg" in the first place. Meanwhile the San Jose Sharks giving D Erik Karlsson an eight year $92 million contract was a bad move because a) it's way too much money and b) his play, given his recent health problems, will begin to deteriorate very quickly, making him a heavy "yoke" for the team.

U.S. Open/LPGA

With Gary Woodland winning the 119th US Open, his first major, look for this "star in the making", to be in contention much more often. Brooke Henderson also made history when she became the winningest Canadian player ever when she won her ninth professional event. Her $330K take home purse doesn't match up well against Woodland's $2.35 million but who said life was fair, eh?

SWBL

The Virden Oilers (3-6) are in a bit of a mini-slump, losers of their last four games, but they'll try and remedy that situation when they host the Deloraine Royals this Monday, a makeup game. Some shaky defence lately has unfortunately hurt them at the most crucial times but with some hard work and perseverance they should be able to turn things around.

AAA Midget

If you want to see the best 15-17-year-old ball players in south west Manitoba, tonight's your lucky night as Oildome will play Midwest in Virden in preparation for the provincials scheduled for later this summer. Until next time....
