I don’t usually write opinions on controversial topics, but I think this is one that needs to be addressed to get people thinking. Also, since I lived in the United States for four years and having friends still down there it hits a little closer to home. Always remember if you never speak up, you can never be heard.

The massacre and hate crime that was committed in Orlando, Florida has really upset me right down to my core.

I am a proud supporter of the LGBTQ community; and on the day of the shooting the United States lost 50 plus innocent individuals, but more than that they lost a sense of security.

In Canada we take for granted that we have safe space to simply be ourselves, but in the United States that is an illusion, that has been broken down every time an American is connected to another mass shooting event.

In the United States it is very common for them to go over evacuation procedures in the case of an active shooter. It use to be ‘if’ a shooter comes and now it is a case of ‘when.’

At the end of the day this is no longer about religion, politics, or sexual orientation – this is about gun violence and the ease with which it’s able to be committed.

I think that something has to be done, an old saying states, “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it.” Well, United States I think it is broken and it is time to take a small step in another direction and try something new with the gun laws.
