Canada 151 - a great day

Canada Day in Virden park, a family affair, July 1, 2018

I think the Canada Day celebration gave people a great opportunity to celebrate our beautiful country together. It’s events like this that distinguish Virden and bring people together.

Following a colourful parade, clouds and a few rain drops threatened bad weather; however, Mayor of Virden Jeff McConnell assured the crowd it would not rain – and he was about 99 percent right.

McConnell explained the historic flag that was raised on the pole in the park – a flag that was once flown on Parliament Hill.

Things for children were a great investment. A number of bouncy house attractions, a photo booth and games were important keys to the success of the Virden family celebration of Canada’s 151 years.

There was a real sense of participation – that everyone was included - as people came and went. Amid stately trees, with flags flying and countless decorations, there was a happy, relaxed atmosphere as people lined up for hamburgers and went for free birthday cake.

It was heart-warming to see kids playing ball, or tag and sometimes with parents joining in. Friends visited; people from elsewhere joined their families, and of course the many leashed dogs accompanied their people.

Performers on Jubilee Stage included local and amateur talent prior to Armadillo taking the stage covering a bunch of favourite tunes. They were personable and had people jigging on the grass.

Throughout the day Virden teacher Darrel Corbel not only emceed the stage shows, but also performed – a super guitarist with vocals to match.

Hats off to the Canada Day committee for this event and to those who sponsored. As vocalist Hailey Plaisier sang – “God keep our land”.
