Mystery solved! For months the new owner of this building at the corner of Seventh Avenue and Wellington Street in Virden’s downtown remained a mystery. It is awaiting transformation into a dental office, with renovations planned for August.

A resident of the RM of Sifton has purchased the building on the corner of Seventh Ave. and Wellington St. with plans to open a dental office in the building that has been a drugstore for decades – Martin’s Pharmacy and then Virden Drugs.

Dr. Joseph Thiessen has been practicing dentistry for five years with Chancellor Dental on 18th St. in Brandon and he is now looking forward to opening his own practice in Virden.

“It’s the perfect building, at 3,000 square feet, it’s all open and ready to start renos this summer,” said Thiessen.

When looking for the right location to open his own dental practice, he immediately thought of Virden.

“Living close to Virden, I felt it would be nice to be part of my own community. I just felt like there’s a need,” he said, adding “I know there are patients going to Brandon, going to Moosomin … to Hamiota.”

With five years of practical experience behind him, he feels the time is right to open a new, up-to-date office to serve families in the area.

“I’ve been working under really good dentists,” he said, adding he intends to hire a hygienist and dental assistants as well as office staff.

The renovation will take some time.

“To open a dental office, there’s a lot of work involved. A lot of plumbing, a lot of electrical and, I want to re-face the building on the outside, to have a fresh, brand-new space there as well.”

Thiessen’s brother Robert will be handling the renovation and he anticipates starting work on the building this August.

It will be the spring of 2019 before his Virden practice is ready for patients.
