Upper Assiniboine River Conservation District (UARCD) Manager Ryan Canart is concerned about the trees planted last week to enhance the ball diamonds in Virden. A car was actually backed onto a sapling a couple of evenings ago while the diamond was in use.

In other places that evening, cars were noticed parked on the water line to the trees. The trees will require water this summer until their root system is established.

The Town of Virden, ratepayers, the UARCD, ball players, and students from Mary Montgomery School are all invested in these trees that line the ball diamond; but the big gain is for those who play ball and those who come to watch.

In five years, if they survive the public, the weather and other factors, these saplings will be attractive. In 10 years they will be shade, shelter and beauty. People at the ball park need to stand up for the new trees.
