In a support appeal for ethnic and local newspapers and community radio stations, Conservative MP Steven Blaney, (Lévis—Bellechasse – Que.) wrote an open letter to Minister of Canadian Heritage Steve Guilbeault.

Blaney states, “In Quebec alone… almost 40 per cent of workers in community radio stations have already lost their jobs.” He says the announcement of “a $30 million advertising campaign to both deliver important health information, and to help the media industry cope with a decline in advertising revenue” is for some, already too late.

He asks, “What portion of the $30 million advertising campaign has been directed to these (small, ethnic and local) outlets…?”

The Empire-Advance agrees: there is no shortage of information to be shared both on our website, empireadvance.ca and in print but, businesses are hurting, or temporarily closed. Advertising is down, and advertising pays for each page.

While Facebook and other social media is of interest, the veracity and accountability of a newspaper cannot be replaced. It continues as a forum for the community and a source of information.
