The Melita and Area Elderly Persons Housing Corp. (MAEPH) recently announced that the Active Adult Rental Apartments Project is going ahead with Phase 1. MAEPH, together with Steel Creek Developers, will be constructing five apartments with garages and the common room at this initial stage.
“We are very pleased to see this project move along,” said Bill Holden, chair of the MAEPH. “It has been in the Board’s plans to provide four to five different levels of housing for our seniors. This new project takes into consideration apartment features that are designed to accommodate aging in place.”
The announcement was made at an information meeting held on September 17, 2019 at the Melita Legion Hall. Steel Creek Developers’ Ken and Andrew Rempel presented the architectural designs and the potential timeline.
The units are going to be constructed at the indoor facility of Grandeur Housing in Winkler. This modular construction approach is meant to make the construction time more efficient since they do not have any downtime in winter. Depending on Grandeur’s production schedule, estimated move in is summer of 2020.
Added Trevor Rempel, vice president for sales and marketing of Steel Creek Developers, “By using modular construction technology, we minimize the construction duration and disruption on site. We are looking forward to getting started and we’re sure that the apartments will fill quickly.”
The size of the apartments will be just under 1,200 sq. ft., with the key feature of the building being the interior access and common space for residents to create community within the building.
“We would like to stress that these new apartments add a complement to our existing facilities,” said Donna Brown, MAEPH board member. “These are meant for adults who lead active lives and want a comfortable, well-appointed home without the burdens of ownership.”
The seed for this project began back in 2016 when the Town of Melita met the Rempel’s at a trade show in Brandon where they were promoting their Steel Creek’s Souris Hotel and Apartments, said Iris Vercaigne, Economic Development Officer for the Town of Melita.
“The area is very fortunate to have local organizations like the MAEPH that have been working hard to give different kinds of new developments for our community members,” said Vercaigne. “It is definitely a milestone for us to get this going.”
Ken Rempel, president of Steel Creek Developers, said he is excited to be working with the MAEPH and the community of Melita. “We immediately fell in love with the location and are excited to construct a building that takes advantage of the golf course views.”
