Cougars are ready for the new season

The Cougars got the 2019/2020 season underway with a training camp in Souris on the weekend of Sept. 6 with 38 players looking for a spot on the Cougar roster in the U18 division of Manitoba AAA.

The team cut down to 26 players for the preseason tournament the weekend of the 13th playing three games. The Cougars jumped all over Interlake dropping them 10-0 on Friday night. Cody Gudnason knocked in four goals in the game, with Parker Korman chipping in with a pair, singles went to Owen Harris, Kain Shearer, Jordan Boyechko and Luke Robson.

Garrett MacDonald and Brayden Know had a pair of helpers, with Ethan Bjarnson, Nolan Wickham, and Colton Miller all picking up assists.

Kieran Stewart and Carson Lockhart combined for the shutout.

The second game saw the Cougars eke out a 2-1win over the Parkland Rangers. Braeden Lewis hooked up with Nolan Wickham and Colton Miller to open the scoring. The Rangers evened the score when Steven Arp found the net. Hunter Wallace scored the winner in the second from Ethan Bjarnson. Kieran Stewart and Carson Lockhart shared the win in net stopping 30 shots.

The Cougars third game was Sunday afternoonagainst the 0-2 Brandon Wheat Kings. Evan White opened the scoring less than two minutes into the game with Brayden Knox and Ethan Bjarnson picking up the assists.

Brandon tied the score when Rylan Hossack scored only to have Trevor Hunt get the lead back with help from Braeden Lewis.  Brandon tied the score when Dalton Andrew found the net. Jacob Dolomont scored an unassisted marker three minutes later and then Kain Shearer put the game on ice with five minutes left in the second period. Carson Lockhart and Eric Reid blocked 17 shots for the win.

The Cougars, Yellowhead and Central Plains all won three games with Parkland, Brandon and Interlake failing to pick up a win.

The Cougars open at home on Saturday, Sept. 28versus the Winnipeg Thrashers and host Interlake the following afternoon.
