Cougars open 2020 with pair of lopsided wins over Norman

The Cats opened with a 9-1 win on Saturday night, and then continued the weekend series with a 13-5 win on Sunday afternoon.

The wins moved them back into fifth place, five points back of Pembina Valley with a record of 20-11-1 good for 41 points.

Saturday night the Cougars scored three goals in each period. Jordan Ploh scored with the man advantage six minutes into the final frame to break Kieran Stewarts shutout bid. Stewart turned aside 14 shots for the win while the Cougars fired 48 shots in Linden Gamblin in the Norman net.

Cody Gudnason opened the scoring from Trevor Hunt and Jordan Boyechko. Hunter Wallace then struck with Matthew Ramsey and Hunt picking up the helpers. Boyechko scored on the power play from Hunt to end the scoring in the first.

The second saw Zach Turner score from Gudnason and Boyechko, before Myles Sobry hooked up with Ramsey and Wallace for the five-goal lead. Colten Miller finished the scoring from Jacob Dolomont and Gudnason.

Norman scored six minutes into the third only to have Wallace pot his second of the night from Ramsey and Sobry. Nolan Wickam then scored from the point with Brayden Knox assisting and Miller finished the scoring with his second of the night, with Luke Robson getting on the score sheet.

Andrew Andries and Jordan Boyechko lead the attack with four goals each on Sunday afternoon. Myles Sobry, Ramsey, Turner, Dolomont and Hunt finished the scoring. Hunt had a pair of assists as did Kain Shearer, Wickam, Brayden Knox and Miller. Robson and Owen Harris had assists to finish the scoring.

Norman Northstars first goal was accidently put in the Cougars net by mistake and then Norman scored 30 seconds later. Norman scored three goals from the point.

The Cougars went 3 for 6 with the man advantage. Eric Reid turned aside 13 shots for the win while the Cougars fired 52 shots at Odin Church and Linden Gamblin in the Northstars net.

Coming up: The Cougars visit Yellowhead early this week before heading to Kenora for a pair of games next weekend. The Cougars face Parkland on January 17 in Carberry and play in Souris against the Bruins the following night.
