Damon Bajus has been a factor on the mound this season for the Elkhorn Expos.

He earned the win when the Expos secured their first victory during the opening week of the South West Baseball League season. Bajus allowed five runs on four hits.  He also threw well in a 9-6 loss to a strong Hamiota club in the season’s second week.

“He is a guy who has lots of movement on his pitches and we can trust to give us lots of quality innings this year,” Elkhorn player/coach Tyler Wood said.

As of Sunday, Bajus was tied with Wood for the Expos lead in innings pitched. In addition to his pitching, Bajus helps the Expos in other ways.

“He can put the bat on the ball when needed, with speed on the base paths,” player/organizer Mike Stevenson said.

In their lone game last week, the Expos fell 5-3 to the Hamiota Red Sox on June 5. At home, Elkhorn got out to a 2-0 first inning lead. The Red Sox rebounded with a run in the second and two in both of the third and fourth innings. Elkhorn pushed one run across in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Josh Martin drove in two runs for the Expos and had a home run. Bradley Bowles took the loss in spite of solid showing on the mound. He allowed only two earned runs on six hits over four innings.

The Expos, 1-5 on the season, have a packed schedule this week. They were to host Oak River on Wednesday and play in Reston on Friday. In a double header on Sunday in Elkhorn, Boissevain and Wawanesa come to play.

VIRDEN OILERS

The Oilers fell to 3-4 after losses last week to Reston, 10-2, and Boissevain, 6-0.

On Friday, the Oilers are in Oak River. The team plays host to Hartney on Sunday afternoon and Deloraine in the evening.
