Baseball season returns to Virden

Oilers to compete with veterans, newcomers
01
Jeff Peel is expected back on the mound this season for the Virden Oilers.

The Virden Oilers are looking forward to being back on the diamond.

The senior team opens the South West Baseball League season on May 21 against the Reston Rockets at home. The squad is once again looking to be competitive in the 11-team league.

“The Oilers are a great organization to play for because of the support we get from the community,” said Virden catcher Brady Potter. “It’s always nice playing in front of a crowd that creates a great atmosphere. We are also competitive every year and have a chance to win every game we play.”

The Oilers compete in the SWBL North Division against the Rockets, Hamiota Red Sox, Rivers Comets, Oak River Dodgers, and the Elkhorn Expos. Elkhorn opens the season on May 22 on the road against Rivers.

“Things are looking good for our season with a comfortable amount of bodies,” said Oilers player-coach Des Koop. “With the North Division being so competitive, our main goal is getting our selves into a playoff spot.”

Koop said the Oilers lost about four players off last season’s team. Perhaps the biggest loss – at least early on – is ace pitcher Curtis Plett. He sustained an injury over the winter but hopes to join the team later on.

Hometown product Jeff Peel will be one of the veterans looked upon to lead the way. The Oilers will count on him on the mound and at the plate.

“Des does a great job keeping core guys around and then bringing in some other guys where holes need to be filled,” Potter said.

Joining the Oilers this season are senior baseball veterans Dustin Asham from Brandon and Brandon Lockerby. In addition, the squad is adding young local talents Braeden Lewis, Mike Graham, and Matt Strain.

“Adding Dustin Asham and Brandon Lockerby is a big help this year,” Potter said. “Two guys that played at the highest level the province offers. We added some younger guys from town also and I am excited to see what they can bring to the table. I’m very excited for the 21st and to see how we stack up.”
