Jordan Mitchell said the best part of playing for his hometown Elkhorn Expos is the pride he feels putting on the jersey.

“I think it’s pretty special when you can get a group of young guys together that put their lives on hold a couple times a week to come together to throw on the Expo jersey to have some fun and represent the town,” he said.

The Expos opened their 2019 South West Baseball League season on Wednesday in Rivers, succumbing to the Comets 11-5. The senior club plays its first home game on Sunday afternoon against Deloraine.

The Expos returned most of their roster from last season. In the summer of 2018, Mike Stevenson, who has been a crucial organizer for the Expos, paced the team with a .400 batting average.

Steve Bonchuk racked up an Expo-best 13 runs batted in. Stevenson and Josh Martin each had four doubles to lead the team.

Tyler Wood, who also handles coaching duties, led Elkhorn last season with more than 35 innings pitched. Shawn Bowles had a staff-best 3.77 earned run average. His twin brother Brad led the team with two wins and 26 strikeouts.

The Expos have some youngsters who will serve as affiliated players this season. This will help “get them interested in the game and keep the team surviving for years to come. They are a strong group of young up-and-comers that make the future bright for the Expos,” Mitchell said.

Virden Oilers

The Oilers opened their SWBL schedule on Tuesday by blanking Reston, 5-0.

On Friday, Virden hosts the Oak River Dodgers then travels to Hamiota on Sunday to face the Red Sox.
