Elkhorn’s Karli Frederick is looking to help the Assiniboine Community College women’s hockey team cap its season in style.

The daughter of Rodney and Bonita Frederick and the Brandon-based ACC Cougars are at the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division II National Tournament, March 27-31 in Frisco, which is north of Dallas, Texas. ACC has had a strong season going 18-6-1 and was ranked second in the West Region in the last rankings.

“I think going to Dallas will be a really cool experience, but I’m most excited to be able to experience it with my teammates and getting to spend the week with them,” Frederick said. “As well, I’m excited for the possibility of winning a national championship to top off a great season we’ve had this year.”

Frederick has played a big role in the Cougars’ success. The assistant captain is third on the team in scoring with 23 points. She has eight goals and a team-high 15 assists.

“Karli plays centre for us and is a hardworking forward who sees the ice well and is able to read and react to different situations on the ice,” Cougars head coach Tony Bertone said.

“Karli plays power play and penalty kill for us and brings a positive attitude and work ethic to the team and is a great teammate.”

This will be Frederick’s second trip to nationals. Last season the Cougars competed in Ohio. She was named to the ACHA All-American Second Team.

Frederick has greatly enjoyed playing and studying at ACC.

“I love all the new friends I’ve made and being able to play hockey while going to school has made it all that more enjoyable,” she said, noting that her teammates have become lifelong friends.

Frederick, studying agribusiness, says, “Having a farming background and growing up on a farm influenced my decision to take agribusiness.” She balances hockey with school by taking advantage of time off to do homework and study.

Frederick appreciates the encouragement her family has provided. “My family has given me so much support during my hockey career and I couldn’t thank them enough for that.”
