Local athletes earn medals at MB Winter Games in Thompson

More events in action Friday, Saturday

Virden and southwest Manitoba communities are well represented by local athletes competing in Thompson at the Winter Games.

Gold for Birtle archer

17-year-old Victoria Saliyeva of Birtle was one of the early winners, earning two medals: gold in the individual female category and bronze in team archery with her teammate from Winnipeg, Tristan Lew Wenzel.

Silver in male hockey

In Bantam male hockey, Team West (2) took the silver medal in an exciting overtime game against Team South, who snagged the gold, on Wednesday.

Bringing home the hockey hardware to southwestern Manitoba are: Hunter Wallace (Oak Lake), Nolan Wickham (Waskada), and Eric Reid (Virden).

In next week’s Empire-Advance, we’ll bring you results and stories of our athletes in figure skating, speed skating, hockey and curling.

The 2018 Manitoba Winter Games conclude on Sat. Mar. 10.
