McAuley’s Jake Poole has enjoyed being a member of Baseball Manitoba’s 16U Development Team this summer.

“The best part of playing for the U16 squad has to be meeting and getting to know different guys from around Manitoba, and also competing for a spot to represent your province at the Canada Cup next fall,” the son of Robin and Dana Poole said.

In July, the team went 5-1 at the Elwood Shootout with a loss in the finals to Carillon. Head coach Curtis Grieve said Poole had a great weekend at the plate.

Poole has been mostly a catcher for the team and seen some time at first base. Grieve sad Poole (16) is a mature young man and stronger than most players his age.

“The thing that sets him aside from many other players is his ability to change the score with one swing,” the coach said. “He is big and strong and has been in many competitive games - either on the field or on the ice.”

WHL, MJHL camp

This fall Poole will attend camp with the Western Hockey League’s Kelowna Rockets and the Virden Oil Capitals of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.

He said he will see what happens at those camps, but he plans to return to the Yellowhead Chiefs midget AAA team.

Meanwhile, Poole is enjoying his summer on the diamond. He has played this year for the Elkhorn Expos midget team and the AAA Midget Oil Dome team as well as the development team.

“What I enjoy most about baseball is having fun with my friends and teammates. Also, playing my best to get to the highest level of baseball I possibly can,” Poole said.

He praised his family for their ongoing support.

“My dad has been coaching me ever since 10-and-under ball for my Elkhorn team,” Poole said. “I’ve been playing in my front yard with my parents ever since I was three years old. My siblings also come and practice with me a lot whether it’s hitting in the cage or just playing catch.”
