With both hockey and academics in mind, Virden Oil Capitals goalie Riley McVeigh has committed to study and play at Stevenson University, an NCAA Division III school, this coming winter.

“The hockey program, only going into its third year, has had success in its first two years - winning the (Middle Atlantic Conference) conference this past season,” said McVeigh, who plans on majoring in business. “The school’s small class sizes and its importance on education draws my attention as I believe I can succeed to the best of my abilities in that environment.”

The Stevenson University coaching staff first talked to McVeigh two years ago when he was an Oil Caps rookie. Last January McVeigh had an opportunity to visit Stevenson University, which is in the Baltimore metropolitan area.

“The school is located in a really cool part of the U.S. - being only 45 minutes from Washington and a few hours from New York,” McVeigh said. “It is a smaller campus, which I really like and almost all the academic buildings have been redone in the last 10 years. The athletic facilities at the university are next to none. Stevenson has put lots of time into building a strong athletic program where I feel like I would succeed not only in the class room but on the ice as well.”

McVeigh recently backstopped the Oil Capitals to their first appearance in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League finals. The Calgary product was 26-12 in the regular season with a 2.83 goals against average. The 20-year-old was eligible to return for a third and final season with the Oil Capitals.

“Being in Virden was the best two years of my life,” said McVeigh in a media release. “There are a lot of good things that I’m taking away – a great small town with a lot of support – so I want to thank everybody in Virden for making me feel at home.”
