Virden Oil Capitals forward Brett Paddock has emerged as a leader and important contributor.

In his second season the 19-year-old forward from Brandon has already surpassed his points total from his rookie season. Paddock is one of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League team’s assistant captains. Head coach Tyson Ramsey said Paddock is one of the guys who really drives the team.

“His work ethic and focus are second to no one and his character and passion for the game is really quite remarkable,” the coach said. “He is a leader in all aspects and is a contributor in every situation. I have been fortunate enough to coach Brett for five years now and I have the utmost respect for what he has accomplished in that time. He is obviously a great player and teammate, but he is also a tremendous person. We are very fortunate to be able to have him in our organization.”

Paddock had 10 goals, 19 assists, and 29 points in 32 games this season. Those totals surpass the eight goals, 18 assists, and 26 points he had as a rookie. After adapting to Junior A hockey and living away from home, Paddock is more comfortable in his second season.

“I believe working hard in the offseason had a big impact on my game,” said Paddock, who billets with Ryan, Kelli and Lily Potter. “Being faster and stronger definitely allows me to capitalize on more opportunities that I may have missed previously. And I think just having some experience in the league helps a lot as well.”

The work ethic that has helped him be a productive player also serves Paddock well as a leader.

“I strive to work as hard as I can when I’m on the ice, and I think that is a quality that is contagious in the locker room,” he said.
