Tyson Ramsey, new assistant coach

Brandon’s Tyson Ramsey has joined the Virden Oil Capitals as the team’s new assistant coach.

He takes over for Dale Lewis, who was head coach Troy Leslie’s assistant last season. Ramsey joins the Manitoba Junior Hockey League squad after seven seasons with the Brandon Midget AAA Wheat Kings – including the last four as head coach. The Wheat Kings were 120-55-1-4 with him at the helm and went to two league finals.

“I look forward to working with Tyson,” Leslie said on the team’s website. “He has played a huge role in the success of the AAA Wheat Kings program.”

Cochrane Heads South

Landyn Cochrane has committed to play at Minot State University. The Beavers compete at the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division I level.

A Russell product, Cochrane joined the Oil Caps part way through last season and helped the team to the MJHL finals. He had 14 goals and 39 points in 34 games. (He started the season with the junior hockey Minot Minotauros.)

“My time spent with the Oil Capitals was unforgettable! The coaching staff was great to me. I had immediate chemistry with all my teammates in the locker room,” Cochrane said on the Oil Caps’ website. “My billets were the best! They were like family to me and will be a part of me for life!”

New Ds

The Oil Capitals have announced the signing of three defencemen.

Moosomin’s Austin Johnston joins the team after playing senior hockey in his hometown following three midget AAA seasons with Moose Jaw.

The other newcomers hail from Ontario. Sean Gula is from Red Lake, Thomas Brassard comes from Thunder Bay. Both played midget AAA last season.
