Virden's baseball Oilers push back to winning side

The Virden Oilers won both contests of their road trip double header on Sunday to improve to 3-2 on the season. After falling 8-0 to Rivers at home on Wednesday, the Oilers beat the Souris Cardinals 10-7 on the road on Sunday afternoon.

The Virden Oilers won both contests of their road trip double header on Sunday to improve to 3-2 on the season. After falling 8-0 to Rivers at home on Wednesday, the Oilers beat the Souris Cardinals 10-7 on the road on Sunday afternoon.

Virden pitcher Jeff Peel earned the win while allowing only one earned run on seven hits. Brandon Lockerby had a triple, two doubles, and a single with four RBIs.

In the evening, the Oilers downed the Wawanesa Brewers, 11-9. The Brewers got out to an 8-1 first inning lead. The Oilers pushed nine runs across the plate in the fourth frame to go up 10-8.

Lockerby and Peel each had a home run for Virden. As well, Peel, Lockerby, and Brady Potter each drove in two runs. Potter had a pair of doubles. Jordan Cullum stole three bases for the Oilers.

Player/manager Des Koop came on in relief of Virden starter Mathew Strain and earned the win on the mound. Koop allowed one run on five hits over three innings of work. Peel earned the save.

This week the Oilers are on the road in Reston on Friday. The team hosts Boissevain on Sunday.

Elkhorn Expos

The Elkhorn Expos were 0-3 last week and fell to 1-4 on the season.

Damon Bajus helped keep the Expos in their 9-6 loss to Hamiota, which leads the SWBL North with Rivers, by holding the Red Sox to six hits and four earned runs over five innings.

In the loss to Hamiota last week, Jake Poole and Steve Bonchuk each batted in two runs for Elkhorn. In a Sunday road doubleheader, the Expos fell 10-2 to Hartney with Randy Rozak and Bryce Kyle each earning an RBI. Elkhorn lost the late game, 8-4, to Souris. Bonchuk was three-for-four at the plate, while Shawn Bowles was two-for-three.

The Expos were to host Hamiota on Wednesday in their lone contest of the week. The team’s next game is June 12 when the Oak River Dodgers come to town.
