Seniors spring into wellness

Seniors Access to Independent Living (SAIL) hosted a successful event at Virden’s TOGP on Wednesday, April 17.

Spring into Wellness was a perfect theme for the day, with inspiring speakers and vendors. The Hall at Tundra place was buzzing with activity. Brightly inviting vendor tables drew participants to find information, ask questions, and be encouraged to reach out for services. Vendors offered imaginative door prizes (from art supplies to one-on-one computer help), and butterfly cookies.

Connie Newman spoke in the morning session: “Taking care of you and me as we age.” As an older adult herself, she brought humor into her empowering message: “Knowledge is your power.” She wears many hats in her work with MASC (Manitoba Association of Senior Communities), Age Friendly, and Social Prescribing.

The afternoon session “Mind your Matter” was presented by Alzheimer Society’s Christine Jefferies. Jefferies gave many examples of how we can improve or sustain our brain function. Everything from getting your hearing checked, to going out for coffee with friends, can benefit your brain health.

The attendees got up and moving (and smiling), with active breaks. Jaymi Darrett from Active Aging, and Steppin’ Up With Confidence, brought in a spring theme with her movement. Heidi Smith, of HS Fitness, brought her expertise with strengthening exercises.

Of course, no gathering is complete without food, and Kliever Katering did not disappoint. Made from scratch, hearty soups and baking were served with a smile.

SAIL is profoundly thankful to the sponsors that partnered with us, enabling us to make this event a success. The Town of Virden, RMs of Wallace-Woodworth and Sifton, Lions Clubs of Virden and Oak Lake, Twin Valley and Valleyview Co-ops, and the Virden Empire Advance. The SAIL board and coordinators have plans for future events and programming.

For personalized supports each community has senior services: for S.A.I.L. there is Kali in Elkhorn, Tanis in Oak Lake, and in Virden, Julie or Krista; Reston provides Seniors Helping Hand, Woodworth Senior Services in Kenton and Miniota Municipal Services to Seniors.
