Habitat for Humanity Manitoba, Virden Chapter

Getting set to build fourth affordable home
Habitat House
This Lyons St. West property will soon be demolished and replaced by a Habitat for Humanity home, the fourth in the organization’s history in Virden.

Habitat for Humanity’s Virden Chapter is preparing to start construction this month on the fourth home in the chapter’s history.

The chapter recently purchased the property at 563 Lyons Street West and intends to demolish the current house and replace it with a new single family home for a low-income working Virden family.

“We are very proud and excited to start this new project and to be able to provide a safe, decent and affordable home for a local family,” said Karen McKinnon, Chair of the Virden Chapter. She adds, “A partner family has been chosen.

“We have had tremendous community support during our past projects, and we anticipate that Virden and area residents will once again roll up their sleeves to assist with construction. And as with all builds, we like to make sure the construction volunteers are well fed, so we will also be grateful for food donations.”

About Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity’s home ownership model empowers families to invest in home ownership. Through volunteer labour and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Habitat for Humanity builds safe, decent houses with the help of home owner (partner) families.

Habitat homes are sold to partner families with no down payment required and are financed with affordable, no-interest mortgages. The homeowners' monthly mortgage payments are set to 27 per cent of their gross income, and mortgage payments go into a revolving fund, which is used by Habitat to build more homes for more families in need.
