Wallace-Woodworth fire department, Virden Ambulance, and RCMP were called to the corner of Lacrosse St. and Government Rd, shortly after 7:30 a.m. on Jul. 21, where a vehicle was on fire.

The driver said she thought she could smell gasoline, heard a loud bang, and then saw fire under the hood of her pick up. She ran from the vehicle, just in time, as more small explosion-like sounds, popped and banged. Within minutes the entire truck was engulfed in flames.

Local firefighters worked quickly to put the fire out; no one was hurt in the fire.

Virden Fire Chief Brad Yochim says that the fire department responds to about half a dozen vehicle fires a year. He added that gas tanks don’t blow up, like the explosions shown in movies. Vehicle fires can vary on how dangerous they are, depending on the cause and location of the fire. A vehicle can burn very quickly, if the cause of the fire is gasoline related.
